Somewhere I know rather well! Spent many a happy hour walking along the canal towpath! I also recall it freezing solid one winter when I must have been about 6, and my Mum letting me walk on it - at the edges at least.... It was odd to be able to see the waterweed still moving under the ice.

For anyone whose ancestors worked on the narrowboats in the Midlands, this is an incredibly useful site. Wolverhampton was a hub for canal families, and many recorded the births of their children or married there, even if they were living on board their boats. There is a searchable database of parish record entries, plus material from surrounding areas such as Willenhall and Bilston. In addition there is a database of burials at Merridale Cemetery. Often cause of death is included in these burial records, and that too can make for interesting reading.
