Somewhere I know rather well! Spent many a happy hour walking along the canal towpath! I also recall it freezing solid one winter when I must have been about 6, and my Mum letting me walk on it - at the edges at least.... It was odd to be able to see the waterweed still moving under the ice.
Lots of information of interest on the Rochdale Canal, including a history section.
Information about canals and canal walks, with some great photos.
An interesting read, with a few family histories included. Not to be missed!
For anyone whose ancestors worked on the narrowboats in the Midlands, this is an incredibly useful site. Wolverhampton was a hub for canal families, and many recorded the births of their children or married there, even if they were living on board their boats. There is a searchable database of parish record entries, plus material from surrounding areas such as Willenhall and Bilston. In addition there is a database of burials at Merridale Cemetery. Often cause of death is included in these burial records, and that too can make for interesting reading.
